Overview of Our Pet Health Care Plans

When you sign up for a PurinaCare® pet health insurance plan, you can choose between two simple plans, PurinaCare® plus Preventive Care and PurinaCare® without Preventive Care.

Our primary plan, PurinaCare® plus Preventive Care, covers eligible accidents and illnesses for your pet as well as routine expenses like annual exams, eligible vaccinations, flea and heartworm control, and dental scaling/polishing. It’s an easy way to help provide your pet with routine preventive care and give yourself true peace of mind.

Our PurinaCare® without Preventive Care plan is right if you simply want to insure your dog or cat against the unexpected. It covers treatment of eligible accidents and illness, including those arising from hereditary conditions, and helps you provide high-quality care if unexpected issues arise.

Notes to Preventive Care Chart

1Puppy and kitten vaccine series and annual adult vaccinations limits include the physical examination and any vaccinations administered by a Licensed Veterinarian in a clinical setting. Benefits for any policy period are limited to either a puppy/kitten vaccine series or adult annual vaccine depending on age of the pet, but not both.
2Coverage for up to 12 monthly doses of Heartworm Preventative and 12 monthly doses of Flea Control, or 12 monthly doses of a combination heartworm preventative/flea control product purchased from a Licensed Veterinarian in a clinical setting.
3Includes pre-procedure examination, pre-procedure lab, anesthesia, hospitalization, the procedure, and all aftercare.

Exclusions from Coverage

Like all insurance, there are exclusions from coverage under PurinaCare® pet health care plans. Items excluded under PurinaCare® include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • All Pre-existing Conditions
  • Breeding, Fertility, and Pregnancy
  • Alternative Care – unless prescribed and performed by a Licensed Veterinarian in a Clinical Setting
  • Cosmetic and Elective Procedures
  • Training – even if prescribed or performed by a Licensed Veterinarian
  • All pet foods for any reason
  • All Nutritional supplements, vitamins, nutriceuticals, holistic medications, herbs, and natural remedies for any reason even if prescribed by a Licensed Veterinarian
  • Grooming, bathing for any reason, and dipping
  • Boarding
  • Preventable conditions are excluded unless you provide preventive care according to your veterinarian’s recommendation(s) for vaccinations and other preventative care (included but not limited to: Parvo, Canine and Feline Distemper, Kennel Cough, Heartworms, Feline Leukemia). Failure to follow your veterinarian’s documented recommendation(s) may result in denial of a claim.
  • Accidents or Injuries intentionally inflicted or intentionally caused by the policy holder
  • Dogs and Cats under 8 weeks of age
  • Accidents that occur before
    12:01 am on the 3rd day following the effective date of coverage
  • Illnesses that manifest themselves before 12:01 am on the 15th day following the effective date of coverage

As long as no claims have been filed during the policy period, you can cancel the policy during the first 14 days of coverage and receive a full refund of premium. You may cancel your policy anytime by giving written notice to us. The effective cancellation date is the date that we receive written notice. No Waiting Period for Preventive Care Benefits
There is no waiting period for Preventive Care benefits. Coverage begins at 12:01 am of the Effective Date of your policy.
Waiting Period for Accidents
Accident coverage begins at 12:01am on the 3rd day following the Effective Date of your policy. Accidents that occur during the waiting period will be excluded from coverage.
Waiting Period for Illness
Your pet becomes eligible for illness benefits at
12:01 am on the 15th day following the Effective Date of your policy. Conditions that occur during the waiting period will be excluded from coverage.
Effective Date
The Effective Date will be listed on the Declarations Page, the first page of your policy.
Policy Transfer
A policy cannot be transferred between different pets. Each pet must undergo an individual application process and underwriting review.

A policy can, however, be transferred between pet owners for the same insured pet, if all premium-owed is current and the request for transfer is made in writing by both involved parties.
