Pet Health Insurance Facts

There are many misconceptions about pet health insurance. Separate the facts from fiction below.

"Pet health care costs are stable."
Fact

Pet health insurance will help you pay for the increasing costs of veterinary care.

Every year, veterinary medicine takes another step forward, and more options become available to help your pet live a longer, healthier life. But some treatments can cost more than most people have available in their savings, or might deplete their savings. Pet health insurance is a way to help make sure that if the worst happens, you’re better equipped to provide high-quality care.

"I can always pay for veterinary care out of my savings."
Fact

Savings alone may not cover all your veterinary needs.

While savings accounts may cover some unexpected veterinary care, it may not cover all the costs, especially if you want to seek high-quality care for your pet. New techniques and therapies are available to help your pet live a healthier life, but the cost of high-quality care may put them out of the reach of many pet owners.

"Pet health insurance is expensive compared to human health insurance."
Fact

Pet health insurance is typically less expensive than human health insurance.

Pet health insurance may be a bargain when compared with most regular human health insurance. An annual survey by the non-partisan Kaiser Family Foundation shows that companies pay an average premium of $4,479 per employee for human health insurance coverage and the average contribution by an employee is $694.*

"Young pets don't need health insurance."
Fact

Health insurance is especially important for young pets.

Young pets need health insurance too. In fact, sometimes they need it more. Kittens and puppies are more likely to fall or hurt themselves when they play. Young puppies often will chew and swallow objects that an older pet would avoid, often requiring surgery. Insuring your puppy or kitten with PurinaCare® plus Preventive Care, gives you additional coverage for early preventative care needs like initial vaccinations, spaying/neutering and microchipping. Insuring early also helps ensure you’ll have coverage already in place if a serious accident, illness or hereditary condition occurs unexpectedly. Pets must be at least 8 weeks of age to be eligible for coverage.

"Indoor pets don't need health insurance."
Fact

Indoor pets get sick and injured.

Whether it’s a hurt leg from a jump or fall, a problem related to eating something your pet shouldn't have, or a long-term disease such as diabetes or cancer, many of the things that happen to pets have nothing to do with going outside.

"Filing claims and getting reimbursed will be a hassle."
Fact

The process for getting reimbursed is simple and transparent. Just follow these three steps:

  1. Print out a claim form before you go to the veterinarian.
  2. Have the clinic staff fill out their parts, and you fill out the rest.
  3. Mail or fax the completed claim form and the veterinarian’s payment receipt to us.

We process and pay eligible completed claims as quickly as possible.
